Boulogne at Christmas

Boulogne is magical during the festive season. When Boulogne’s atmospheric Christmas market is in full swing, carol singers serenade the shoppers and the whiff of mulled wine sweetens the frosty air.

On sale is a sumptuous choice of local produce, gifts and crafts. There will be lots of entertainment including music, fireworks and the illumination of the Belfry.

A must-buy is a Christmas Pudding. You can find one in most parisseries from late November to January and of course in the market. The recipe is similar to the English version but with added prunes and dry fruits laced (heavily!) with rum. It is then steam cooked in a muslin.

When serving this Christmas pudding, lay in on a large plate, turn out the lights and flambé the pudding with a mixture of rum and sugar and keep on basting as long as there is rum left on the plate. Buy an extra one and keep it for next year, when it will be even tastier.

For a taste of this spirited pudding make sure you don’t miss the traditional Christmas pudding give-away at the Enclos de l’Eveche next to the Cathedral. These look innocent enough, but they are full of rum.

Highlights include

St.Nicolas Parade – The arrival and parade of St.Nicolas through Boulogne’s town centre, followed by a firework display near the port on 14th December.
