This stylish shop, part of a global chain, has its head office in Paris, but this branch nestles unobtrusively opposite the ramparts in the old town. However, before you enter, prepare to be dazzled by an infusion of vibrant red – the house colour. Red decor, red chocolate boxes and tins of tea and coffee and even red roses made of sugar all set the scene for an array of luxury food items.

The origins of the chain date from 1854, when Ferdinand Hédiard, allegedly gave Alexandre Dumas his first pineapple to taste. He opened his first shop in Place de la Madelaine, Paris in 1855 and over hundred and fifty years later Hediard is still going strong and still offers French delicacies around the world, having 400 boutiques in 30 countries.

Hediard describe the shop as a ‘Boutique Gourmand’ – a boutique of gastronomy. It’s a good description because you are quite simply spoilt for choice if you love chocolates, sugared jellies, jams (like Hediard jasmine petal jam), pates, caviar, French wines, champagnes and liqueurs. All these goodies nestle for attention on their shelves. Buy them separately or in a beautifully put together gift pack. This surely must be the ideal place to find the ideal present for your favourite gastronome.
